// THE SHORT VERSION

August 31, 1997, the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris. Princess Diana, Dodi Fayed, and a driver three times over France’s legal limit hit a concrete pillar at speed while running from paparazzi. Only the seatbelted bodyguard survived, and it took the ambulance an oddly long time to cover three miles.

The crew weighs the conspiracies: that the royals killed her to stop a Muslim marriage, that she was pregnant, that Charles tampered with the brakes, and that her own butler letter predicted it. Eric lands on a hard 50-50.

“Switch the samples. It’s not that hard to be like, hey, here’s some blood homie.”

— jorge, on the record
// THE EVIDENCE
  • The Pont de l’Alma tunnel crash and driver Henri Paul being three times over France’s 0.5 g/L legal limit, plus Prozac in his blood
  • The paparazzi chase and the missing seatbelts, with bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones the only survivor because he buckled up
  • The suspiciously slow ambulance run, roughly 90 minutes to a hospital three miles away, and the negligence theory
  • Mohamed Al-Fayed’s murder claims and the MI6 theory, plus the pregnancy rumor Dodi’s father floated in 2003
  • Diana’s own letter to her butler predicting brake failure and a staged car accident
// CASE QUESTIONS
How did Princess Diana die?
She died on August 31, 1997, from injuries sustained when her car crashed into a pillar in the Pont de l’Alma road tunnel in Paris. She suffered a severe chest wound and went into cardiac arrest, and was pronounced dead at Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital.
Was Henri Paul, the driver, drunk?
Yes. Toxicology found Henri Paul’s blood alcohol was roughly three times the French legal limit of 0.5 grams per liter. His blood also contained traces of the antidepressant fluoxetine (Prozac).
Was Princess Diana pregnant when she died?
No. The 2008 Operation Paget inquest concluded there was no evidence Diana was pregnant. The claim came mainly from Mohamed Al-Fayed, and the inquest jury rejected it.
Did the official inquest find Diana was murdered?
No. The 2008 inquest jury ruled it an unlawful killing due to the grossly negligent driving of Henri Paul and the pursuing paparazzi. It found no evidence of a murder plot.

All right everybody, welcome to the podcast. The Conspiracy Podcast. I’m Eric, this is Sean, Jorge. Hello, hello, what’s up everybody. We’re back again, this is the death of Princess Diana, literally the tragedy that rocked us all. This is going to be a good one. It might suck, but it could be good. A little dark, this was rough. This was 1997, people were messed up. Let’s go back to 1997, a little time travel. Paris.

So Diana, Princess of Wales, she was born 1 July 1961. She was a July baby. She met Charles. When she was 16 she met Charles. Funny enough, Charles was dating her sister at the time. He was dating her sister. I never trusted Charles, he was a scumbag. So on 29 July 1981 Diana and Charles were married at St Paul’s Cathedral. She was 20. 600,000 people attended the wedding. Do you know how many people watched it on TV? One billion people watched her marriage. That’s crazy, that’s more people than watched the moon landing, isn’t that nuts.

By the way, Charles was 32 when they married, she was 20, 12 years. That makes sense, quite a little bit of a difference there. So her title then became Her Royal Highness Princess Diana of Wales. Then her and Charles had Prince William and Prince Harry, and they became the second and third in line of the throne. Behind Will and Harry, they’re second and third. So it’d be Charles and then them.

At a certain point in time in her life she was the most photographed person in the world. How do they even know that, who’s quantifying this data. Part of this whole thing is the paparazzi were so all about the royal family. She wasn’t like a royal, you know, she wasn’t very conservative. She was completely different and that’s why it was weird, because she was just like, oh my God, she’s willing to talk to us and willing to be in the spotlight, and the Royals were like, don’t look at us, we don’t exist. She was an iconic figure. She was beautiful, she was down to earth, she was kind of like an outsider, but an outsider that hit the lotto. You can’t take her out, she’s in.

What’s interesting is most people who get tons of money and they didn’t work for it, they become jerks, or they don’t necessarily do a lot of good with it. She was doing hella good. She did a lot of charity stuff. One of the things she did was she was one of the first dignitaries who took photos with people who had AIDS. She wasn’t afraid. At the time people didn’t know, oh if you shake my hand. They didn’t realize it was only via blood or actual fluid transmission. She was one of the first dignitaries to actually take photos with people, and then it became more like, okay, you didn’t get AIDS and you could touch them. And then she also did a lot of work in Africa about landmines.

So in the mid 80s things started to appear strained in their marriage, so much publicity. I feel like he was missionary only for sure. Diana was the best, he was the piece of garbage. So they actually divorced. And Diana later said in interviews that almost as soon as they were married, Charles was in contact with somebody named Camilla. Camilla Parker or something. She was way uglier than her too, which is bizarre. And so Diana said that it’s difficult to have a marriage with three people. Shots fired. She also said that Charles only married her under pressure from his father to get married to a suitable bride sooner rather than later.

I’m confused by all the knighthoods. Elton John’s a Sir, so just so we’re all clear. Sean Connery is a knight. The Royal lineage has gotten really complicated. So after Diana knew Charles was being unfaithful with Camilla, she began having her own affairs. Payback. There was a couple, his name was Captain Hewitt. During this whole time Diana went through some problems with the marriage and the divorce and the paparazzi. She talked about getting bulimia, depression, a never-ending sense of inadequacy. You feel like you’re lesser than, you’re always held up to a standard. It seems like the Royal Playbook right there. It’s like, oh, you leave, you’re done, they crush you.

So now I’m going to talk about Dodi Fayed. His name is Dodi Fayed, but that’s a short name. The full name is Emad El-Din Mohamed Abdel Fayed, better known as Dodi. There’s a picture of him and Diana. She’s way better looking than him. So Dodi Fayed was an Egyptian film producer and the son of billionaire Mohamed Al-Fayed. So you’re in that circle. In July of 1997 Fayed became romantically involved with Diana. So keep in mind this is July 1997, and she died in August. Most people don’t know that it was a two-month, no, July is one month before August. One singular month.

So earlier that summer Fayed had become engaged to an American model named Kelly Fisher. He actually bought a house in Malibu for himself and Fisher with his daddy’s money, of course not with his own money. Most people who are the son of a billionaire just stay the son of a billionaire. If you pull up the photos he’s not a good looking man. He’s okay, but he’s not like Idris Elba. But Charles, Prince of Britain, one of the last monarchs. If your dad is a billionaire are you a billionaire? No, it’s different. Here’s the situation, Bill Gates donating all of his money except for 10 million for his kids, your dad’s a billionaire, you’re not a billionaire, you’re a 10-millionaire.

Here’s the thing, Prince Charles, heir to the throne, the last great throne, the heir apparent to the last monarch on the planet. Princess Diana, to the best of our knowledge, is not. But here’s the thing, it’s not about the money for her. Look, if you’re a woman and there’s a dude, he’s powerful, he can take care of you, he loves you, he’s a good conversationalist, what’s she going to say, no? If my wife was with me and she could move me a lot faster, I was like, I’m the heir of the throne, trust me, she’d be like, where’s your apartment? It wouldn’t take me as long as it did to make her marry me.

All right, so on August 30th 1997 around 4:30 p.m. Diana and Fayed arrived at the Ritz Paris. You know who owned the Ritz Paris? Fayed’s dad, of course he did, the rich bastard. So they arrive through the back door and occupy the Imperial Suite, at 4:30 p.m. So between 5:40 and 6:30 p.m. reportedly Fayed ventures to a place called Repossi Jewelers, and two rings are later delivered to the Imperial Suite. However, a 2003 Vanity Fair article says Diana told a friend that the ring she expected to receive would go firmly on her right hand. She was not ready, I mean it was a month in. Come on, you’re actually not rich, your dad’s rich, and it’s only a month.

So around 7 o’clock Diana and Fayed exit the Ritz through the rear and are driven to his residence which is near the Arc de Triomphe. So wait, you have a house and you stayed at the Ritz anyways? I’d just go to the house, homie. But it was dad’s hotel, but you have a house. It’s hard to see the upper class from the lower class, I’m blinded by the opulence. So around seven. Then at 9:50 p.m. utilizing the hotel’s front entrance the couple enters and heads for the restaurant. They went back to the hotel. So forgive me, this is all in French, and French is the worst for me on pronunciation.

The couple enters and heads for L’Espadon, after forgoing reservations at Benoit Paris because of rampant paparazzi. Dodi orders Dover Sole, which I don’t know what that is, vegetable tempura, and a mushroom and asparagus omelet. Vegetable tempura sounds fire right now. Anderson explains Fayed quickly grew suspicious that photographers might be posing as restaurant patrons, and requested that their food be delivered directly to their room instead of at the restaurant. That’s going to make a dude paranoid as hell, like everybody’s out to take a picture. They don’t care about him, they’re photoshopping him out of the photos.

So then we move into midnight, so now it’s August 31st, the witching hour. So with bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones, Fayed and Diana reportedly attempt to evade photographers by leaving the hotel through its rear entrance to return to his apartment. Why this back and forth game, it’s ridiculous. So they enter the back seat of a black Mercedes to be driven by Ritz security employee Henri Paul. This guy’s Ritz security, his dad’s security. According to Christopher Anderson’s book, The Day Diana Died, Paul the driver had at a minimum two drinks, he had a scotch, and he had a beer. Later on in autopsy it was determined his alcohol level was three times France’s legal limit.

What’s France’s legal limit though? The legal limit in France is 0.5 grams per liter of blood. He was three times that limit. To equate that to US terms, our legal limit is 0.08 grams per liter of blood, and he was at like 1.5 grams per liter, which in our system is like a 0.15, which is pretty toasty. Below 0.15 you’re probably getting tased, in America they’re tasing you and you’re going to jail. Here’s the confusing part though, would one beer and a glass of scotch do that? It’s possible depending on the scotch, if you had like four fingers. We don’t know that data. For every drink your blood alcohol level goes up by 0.02, so it takes about four to five drinks to get up to 0.08. So he had like 10 to 12 drinks, my dude was getting tossed.

So in September 1997 an analysis of Paul’s blood, hair and spinal cord later detected, in addition to the scotch and beer, Prozac, and something called Tiapride, which is sometimes used to combat alcohol withdrawal. So he was clearly an alcoholic. So you’re taking this drug that’s supposed to be for alcoholics, antidepressants, so maybe he did have just a scotch and a beer but he’s also taking antidepressants on top of it, so he’s faded. But isn’t the blood alcohol level only for alcohol? It might be easily skewed by other substances, but I don’t actually know how that works.

So at approximately 12:23 a.m. the speeding car attempted to outrun paparazzi. There was a bunch of paparazzi taking photos along the side the whole way, it went into the tunnel and smashed into a concrete pillar. So to clarify, they’re driving and there’s paparazzi driving next to them taking photos, they’re getting all these flashes in your eye. If you’re not drinking that’s still going to mess you up. So they get into the tunnel, they hit a concrete pillar. So Paul’s coworker Trevor, the bodyguard, buckled his seat belt and he was the only one who lived. So nobody else had their seat belt on. Fayed and Paul died on the scene.

Following the accident a Dr Frederick happens to be driving by, and he tends to Diana with limited supplies before the ambulance arrives. The nearby workers and the people who arrived at the scene had to use a chainsaw to get Diana out of the car. Jesus Christ. So that was at 12:23. So at 1:20 a.m. after attempting to stabilize Diana on site, the ambulance transports her to the hospital. Transported to the hospital an hour and 12 minutes later, what the hell. The French ambulance subscribes to a different kind of method than the American ambulance. Don’t ever get hurt in France because you’re done.

In America they do a scoop and run technique, instantly get you in and get you to the hospital, they don’t try to do anything there. But at that time French ambulances would try to stabilize you and work on you, if we can fix you here forget the hospital. Along the way she suffers cardiac arrest and the ambulance stops and performs CPR and tries to help her. So the initial call came in at 12:26. She arrived at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris, three miles away, at 2:06. That’s sketchy, three miles away she arrived at 2:06. About 90 minutes, she got there at 2 a.m. Three miles, and they’re not getting stopped by traffic lights, they’re going.

So at 1:45 a.m. the royal family was notified. At 2:01 a.m. she got to the hospital and went under for surgery. At 4:00 a.m. she was pronounced dead. The hospital anesthetist Dr Bruno Riou said Diana’s body arrived in a condition of serious hemorrhage and shock. An urgent surgery showed a severe wound to the left pulmonary vein. Despite the closure of this wound and two-hour external and internal cardiac massage, no official respiratory circulation could be established. By 6:00 p.m. Diana’s body left the hospital bound for England. About an hour later their plane touches down at Northolt where a ceremonial guard carries her coffin draped in the Royal Standard to a waiting hearse.

One of the theories is that they messed up the medical treatment on purpose. It seems a little sketch. Two hours later the most important person in the universe gets to the hospital that’s three miles away. A crackhead will get to the hospital in seven minutes here. It’s a little weird that keeps this story going. Why would it take that long, especially because they know who it is. We just established she was the most photographed person on Earth. Imagine if Kylie or Kendall, one of the Kardashians, got in a car accident.

So here are a couple theories that have been going around. One of them is Princess Diana was assassinated to prevent her from marrying a Muslim. Henri Paul’s father, Jean Paul, said British police had told him that Diana had been knocked off by the royal family to prevent her from marrying Dodi, who is Muslim. That’s not the weirdest thing ever, because the royal family is so conservative. Even though she was divorced out, which is probably the worst thing they’ve ever had to deal with, the stigma of a divorce in a hyper Catholic conservative family, a Muslim after that might just blow everyone’s head off.

So Henri’s father, Henri was the guy who was driving while intoxicated, he said, Diana was killed and my son was killed, I believe they were both murdered, my son was simply collateral damage of a plot to kill Diana and it killed him as well. But why was your son the one drinking? He was saying it was collateral damage. Maybe he had some hottie there, like have another scotch. Later it was said that the police dismissed his reports because there was no evidence to support it.

Here’s a theory that was flying around, that the driver Henri Paul was MI6, basically the equivalent of British intelligence. He was in on this conspiracy to take out Princess Diana, and they were like, kill yourself. But why is she so dangerous? Well, she was an outsider, you’re going against the most powerful family, they just didn’t like her, they didn’t like her ways of being so nice and outgoing to people. I view it as, you’re the most photographed person in the world, therefore everything you say holds weight with everyone who hears it. Like Michael Jackson, he was the most known person in the universe, you have power. Power is by being known. So that could be a threat to the monarchy if she was like, hey, they’re doing bad things, you guys got to listen to me, and everyone would believe her, instantly.

I think that’s where the threat might have been, whereas maybe she knew what was happening behind closed doors. Now that they were divorced she had no loyalty to them. I’m pretty sure she got some sort of payoff. A dowry is a white person word, it’s when a white person marries another white person and gets money to marry the other white person. It’d be like if when you were marrying your wife, her parents gave you a million dollars just to marry her. It’s a great system, I did not get that. I love America.

So the other theory was that Diana was pregnant, so they had to kill her. But why would that matter if she was pregnant, that kid’s not the heir to the throne. It’s back to that whole thing, a Muslim baby in the royal family, super hyper religious. So the reason why this conspiracy continues to persist is because Dodi’s father said in 2003 that Diana called him and told him that she was pregnant the night of. Why would she call him? It was strange though, the blood tests were done at the scene of the accident, no signs of pregnancy.

Either that information is not coming out to the public, maybe he didn’t actually say that, or it’s getting suppressed. But here’s the thing, why would she call him and tell him? When you’re a monarch, queen of a country that’s powerful, one of the top five, they do some blood tests, it’s like, as my good friend Eric would say, switch the samples. It’s not that hard to be like, hey, here’s some blood homie, check your Bank of America account. Or as we say in Mexico, plata o plomo, money like you want the money or you want the bullet. I’ll take the money.

So another one is similar, the other theory is that Prince Charles plotted to kill her by tampering with their brakes. The reason for that is, 10 months after they got a divorce she wrote a letter to her butler. Just imagine if you’re a royal and you’re not really allowed to go out much, your homies are going to be your help, the butler is going to be your dude, the chef is going to be my guy. So she wrote a letter to the butler claiming that Charles was plotting to kill her so he could marry somebody else.

This is a quote, this is what she says: this particular phase in my life is the most dangerous, my husband is planning an accident in my car, brake failure and serious head injury, in order to make the path clear for him to marry Tiggy. Who the hell is Tiggy, is she a Spice Girl? She’s a former nanny. So then she continued to write, Camilla is nothing but a decoy, so we are all being used by the man in every sense of the word. So Camilla is the mistress, and he could even get a special person, the ex-nanny. He’s pulling a Schwarzenegger here, classic Schwarzenegger.

Just like the autopsy, they check the car, right, there’s nothing wrong with the car. Honestly though, the car is smashed like a sardine in the two hours it took to get her to the hospital. But afterwards of course they checked the car, and from the research I looked into, they checked the car, there was no tampering with the car. So it was an accident in accordance. Is this letter that she wrote to her butler verified, like that’s her handwriting, she wrote it? I don’t know that info. That’s the smoking gun, she said an accident in my car.

How many times have famous people predicted their own death? Tupac and Biggie, keep it going. The point being is that a paranoid worry doesn’t necessarily equate to murder. I understand, but imagine what she knows that we don’t know, being involved with that family would probably give you a really good reason to be paranoid. The amount of power and sway. When you run a country, look at Joe Biden’s son, he’s literally on video smoking crack with a hooker and no one gives a damn, because that’s how much power comes with the office. When you’re in a monarchy it’s the same thing, for Queen and Country, for King and Country, you’re brought up to literally respect the office and you’re dying or sword for the Queen. And that was the thing with her, she was very much against that, an outsider.

So Jorge, where do you stand? I actually don’t think they took her out, I think it was just an accident. Definitely that guy was done for sure, the driver Henri Paul killed her, in an accident. If he’s drunk as hell, you got this paparazzi next to you just flashing lights, that’s a recipe for disaster. You’re drinking, you’re on Prozac, you’re on the alcohol withdrawal drug Tiapride, that’s a very good recipe for crashing. And then you’re not wearing your seat belt, and you hit a pillar in a tunnel. But here’s the thing, they took so long, when they got to her they should have gotten to the hospital and saved her. A little bit of negligence, but the theory of negligence on purpose, I don’t subscribe to that.

I think she was killed, I think it was a plot. Hear me out. So you have someone that’s taking drugs literally for alcohol withdrawal, so that person is clearly a raging alcoholic. A 0.15 to a raging alcoholic is like a zero for us. I grew up with a kid and his dad was a raging alcoholic, his dad would drink a 24 pack of Milwaukee’s Best Ice and be chilling, he would smash a 24 pack and be totally fine, he’d drive and be completely coherent. So if you got to think, a 0.15, while that’s high for the normal populace, a guy who’s taking alcohol withdrawal meds, a 0.15 is like nothing, zero.

And then the immense amount of power and influence on the other side of the coin, especially on the hyper conservative side. Like him being a Muslim and them being Roman Catholic, that could have been a controversy and they’re trying to stay on the radar. So just take her out for that reason. I believe that it was a setup, because come on, if you’re a raging alcoholic and you have to take meds because you’re such an alcoholic, a 0.15 ain’t nothing to you. But when you mix it with meds it amplifies it. Yeah, but I’ve seen alcoholics, the amount they can consume is unbelievable. I think she was killed, she was too much of a threat and too much of an outspoken voice. She knew what happened and at any point in time she could have been like, hey, and it could have been a huge problem, everyone listened to her.

What do you think Eric? This one’s tough, because the stories of royal family history, they always are shitty. The royalty of England is really dark, it’s deeper than Game of Thrones, they have beheading wives. One would hope that we’ve moved into a civilized age, but historically it has not been that. But at the same time my logical side says it’s just an accident, like Jorge says, you let a drunk person drive you home, you’re going to crash. Just like Jeffrey Epstein killed himself in jail, 100% accident, accidents happen every day, we got to do that one. So Eric, we’ll call it a 50-50.

My logical sense says it was just an accident, they were trying to get away from paparazzi. They hit a pillar at 70 miles an hour at midnight, they were all drinking. Have you seen the car? It looks like a sardine, crushed. If you’re a billionaire, pay your security to not drink while you’re drinking, step one, pay your security enough to not drink on duty. Especially when they’re driving you. And I don’t like that Henri Paul’s dad says all that stuff and then his son was the one driving drunk, and he was just a driver from the Ritz, not a special dude, a regular guy, not even part of their life. He’s what we call lawsuit jaded, I’m suing the crown, he’s part of the conspiracy.

I remember that though, so well. It was such a tragedy, such a horrible thing, the world was messed up about it. And she wasn’t even the princess anymore and still people were upset, they couldn’t believe it. And it went on for a while too. That’s the amount of influence she had, she wasn’t even in the royal family anymore and people were messed up about it, people who weren’t even English, Americans were like oh my God.
